A-B Classroom – differentiation in progress

The constantly-changing diversity of A-B Classroom should not be underestimated; however, it should only serve as a reminder that each child is important and has needs that command attention. NCLB provides a framework that undergirds this educators’ daily exercise in the classroom – every student is met on their level, at a point that challenges but does not frustrate (or tries not to, anyway). The Standards of Learning (in Virginia) lay out a separate framework that details instructional plans by grade level. When the SOL’s are coordinated with NCLB, a wonderful thing happens – especially here in A-B Classroom.
Another facet of this educators’ professional responsibilities is that of individualized education program (IEP) Coordinator. As IEP Coordinator, I am responsible for amending currently enrolled diagnosed students’ paperwork to reflect a change of venue for delivery of services. It is my responsibility to contact parent initially, explain the ramifications of the amendment process, and recoup a verbal agreement contingent upon receipt of supporting paperwork for authorization signature. This information is also shared with the student; and the local education authority (LEA) is contacted via cc/U.S. Mail.
Finally, each week a new vocabulary word is proffered for use by the students as a way to increase their individual word power. The word is noted in the wiki and the students are responsible for learning correct pronunciation and use of the word in everyday parlance.
